Course on Documenting and Archiving
from a Restorative Justice Perspective:
Core Module
24 – 28 October 2022
Course description:
Documentation containing information related to violations of human rights and international humanitarian law plays an important role in restorative justice processes (hereinafter also referred to as dealing with the past). It is indispensable for truth-seeking, accountability, reparations, institutional reforms, vetting, memorialization and history. However, if the creation, collection, management, and preservation of such information are not properly done, records and archives can be at risk of losing their value and thus prevent their future usability.
In this course, participants will acquire a comprehensive understanding of how archival practices can support restorative justice processes. Moreover, principles and good practices related to the creation and capturing of information and the arrangement and description, access, preservation, and protection of archives will be introduced.
